Sir,
REORIVED 52 MAY 1940 CO RECY
GOVERNMENT HOUSE,
HONG KONG.
19th April, 1940.
With reference to my confidential (2)
despatch of 18th January, 1940, regarding the
escape of certain Chinese soldiers from their
place of internment in Hong Kong, I have the
honour to inform you that one interned soldier
was shot and wounded in an unsuccessful attempt
to escape from the Argyle Street internment camp on
the morning of 19th January, 1940.
2.
At 6.15 a.m. this man was seen crawling
towards the outer wire fence by an Indian sentry
who called upon him to stop and blew his whistle.
The internee took no notice but climbed to the top
of the fence and jumped down on the other side.
The alarm was given and shots were fired by sentries
who were armed with Greener guns. A squad of police
left the camp and found the escaped internee lying on
open ground a short distance away with a broken ankle
and a pellet wound in the head. He was taken in an
ambulance to the Kowloon Hospital and there detained
until 3rd February when he was discharged and returned
to the internment camp.

He continued to receive treatment at the
camp hospital until 15th April but is now reported
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
MALCOLM MACDONALD, M.P.,
